Genealogical History of the Earldom of Sutherland
By Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun
Edited by H. Weber, London 1813
A very rare work, originally compiled by Sir Robert Gordon between
the years c.1615 to c.1630. With a continuation by Gilbert Gordon
of Sallagh. Sir Robert Gordon (1580-1656) was the fourth son of
Alexander Gordon, earl of Sutherland by his second wife. He had
many wide-ranging interests and was amongst other things a noted
genealogist and historian who made it part of his business, as Tutor
of Sutherland, to record the pedigrees of many of the clans and
families of the northern Highlands. His manuscript Genealogical
History of the Earldom of Sutherland was compiled between the years
c.1615 to c.1630 and was continued down to the year 1651 by his
kinsman Gilbert Gordon of Sallagh. To Sir Robert we are indebted
for preserving many details of the traditional histories of the
northern Scottish clans including the Gunns, MacIvers, Mackays,
Macleods, Murrays, Sinclairs, Sutherlands and others. In addition
this book contains essential genealogical information for the clans
and families of Gordon, Gunn, Keith, Murray, Sinclair, Sutherland,
and many others.
