Henry Crabb Robinson Travel Journal extract:
".... Having myself dined, I left my companions at the
inn and called on Mr. De Quincey, my Temple Hall acquaintance. He
has been very much an invalid, and his appearance bespoke of his
health. He was very dirty and even squalid. I had read a bad account
of him from Wordsworth, whom he has not seen for a long time. It
appears that he has taken to opium, and, like Coleridge, seriously
injured his health. I understand, too, though Wordsworth was reserved
on the subject, he has entangled himself in an unfortunate acquaintance
with a woman. He seemed embarrassed when he saw me, and did not
ask me to walk upstairs, but said he should have bed for me tomorrow.
He apologised for not having written on account of bad spirits,
and said he was unfit to see company. On this I intimated that I
should be sorry to break on his retirement. However, afterwards
he became better, and on my mentioning to Wordsworth and the ladies
what I had seen, all wished me, for his sake, to accept his offer
to walk out with me as beneficial to himself. Mr. De Quincey returned
with me to the inn .... and he accompanied us a way on our road
to Ambleside .... We reached Wordsworth's near seven o'clock."
