History of the Province of Cat

Rev. Angus Mackay (1860-1911) was born at Farr, in Sutherland, on 23rd November 1860, Educated at Old Aberdeen Grammar School and St. Andrews University from which he later graduated MA in 1885. He attended New College, Edinburgh, and was licensed by the Free Presbytery of Tongue in 1886. In 1889 he was called to the Free Church congregation of Westerdale in Caithness and was ordained 12th March the same year. He was an antiquary with a particular interest in astronomy, genealogy and history. He wrote the Book of Mackay (1906); The History of the Province of Cat (Wick 1914 – published posthumously); and Genealogy of the Family of Mackay of Sandwood and Kinlochbervie (London 1904). He was also the contributor of the article on the Lords Reay in Sir James Balfour Paul's Scots Peerage. He died 9th December 1911 and was buried in Farr Churchyard. Published in 1914 copies of Mackay History of the Province of Cat are now very hard to come by.
