Memoirs of the late war in Asia
With a narrative of the imprisoment and sufferings of our officers
and soldiers.
By an Officer of Colonel Baillie's Detachment [William Thompson,
LLD]
2 vols. J. Murray London, 1788
William Thompson was a survivor of the awful defeat inflicted on
the British Army by the combined forces of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan
at the battle of Perembaukum, near Conjeveram in India in 1780.
In common with other survivors he compiled and wrote his memoirs
of those terrible events and these were published in 1788. Other
surviving officers also wrote and published their memoirs, very
often as a means of supplementing the meagre income they obtained
as wounded veterans. Thompson's War in Asia is one of the
most detailed and accurate accounts containing maps and battle plans
together with lists of the officers and men of Macleod's Highlanders
who perished in one of the worst defeats of British arms.
